What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that began in India more than 5000 years ago. Ayurveda means the study of life. It takes a natural approach to all aspects of health and well-being.

Ayurveda is based on the idea that each person has certain life forces (doshas) and everything in the universe is connected. An imbalance in one area can affect another. When the imbalance is not fixed, disease and illness can occur. Ayurveda mostly uses nutrition, lifestyle changes, and natural treatments. These are used to support balance and a return to health. Ayurveda is very focused on overall health.

The term āyurveda (Sanskrit: आयुर्वेद) is composed of two words, āyus, आयुस्, “life” or “longevity”, and veda, वेद, “knowledge”, translated as “knowledge of longevity” or “knowledge of life and longevity”.

1. Balance of the Three Doshas

Ayurveda says the body is governed by three fundamental energies (doshas):

  • Vata – movement, air and space elements
  • Pitta – metabolism, fire and water elements
  • Kapha – structure and lubrication, earth and water elements

Health exists when these doshas are balanced; disease occurs when they are disturbed.


2. Five Elements (Pancha Mahabhuta)

Everything in the universe—including the body—is made of five elements:

  • Earth
  • Water
  • Fire
  • Air
  • Space

These elements combine to form the three doshas.


3. Prevention Over Cure

Ancient texts emphasize daily and seasonal routines to maintain health:

  • Dinacharya – daily lifestyle practices
  • Ritucharya – seasonal health adjustments
  • Proper diet, sleep, exercise, and mental balance.

4. Individualized Medicine

Ayurveda stresses that every person has a unique constitution (Prakriti). Treatments are personalized based on:

  • body type
  • digestion
  • age
  • climate
  • lifestyle

5. Holistic Health

Health in Ayurveda includes:

  • Sharira – body
  • Manas – mind
  • Atma – soul

True health means harmony among all three.


According to ancient texts, Ayurveda is a holistic science of life that teaches how to maintain health, prevent disease, and achieve balance between body, mind, and environment.
